It has been very interesting to watch the change in habits of the two Avoca males, as they are spending more time on our concession whilst mating with a lioness from the Sand River pride. An interaction between the Sand River lionesses, 2 young cubs, and an Avoca Male! The young cubs try to nurse from their mother - and get kicked away - at which point they decide it might be a good idea to try and play with the Avoca male. How does one measure the success of male lions - is it the amount of territory held, or the number of prides controlled and how many offspring they sire?

However you measure it; we're sure the Avoca male lions have it.
As far as we know they control two (potentially three different prides), and they also traverse a large territory considering the coalition consists of just the two of them.

Last night, guests at @andbeyondkirkmanskamp were enthralled once again, as these male lions announced themselves with roars which were heard across our concession.

Full to the brim! One of the Avoca males finishes feasting on a buffalo near @andbeyondkirkmanskamp. The herds of buffalo are in immaculate condition compared to two years ago after the drought. As a result the Avoca males followed different herds around our concession for three days attempting to hunt, and were unsuccessful. “In the summer time, when the weather is fine” Temperatures are soaring at @andbeyondkirkmanskamp, with highs regularly in the 35 - 45 degree range. Wildlife update at @andbeyondkirkmanskamp: Despite numerous threatening thunderstorms, the beginning of summer has failed to bring as much rain as we would have liked. Nonetheless the impala lambs are now out and about in droves, and the herds are growing fast. Our leopard viewing has been consistent recently and we have reason to believe the Teardrop female may have given birth to a new litter! If so, she has timed it perfectly with the explosion of young impala on offer. The Split Rock male has been seen patrolling almost every corner of the Sand River as he continues to cement himself as the dominant male leopard around. The Ndzilo female aggressively chased away the young Xivindzi female who has been exploring a little too far into other leopards' territories. Finally, after a brief absence, the Avoca male lions returned from their territorial patrol in the Kruger National Park and one was seen mating with the younger Eyrefield lioness.
